Travle Game Hints: What Each Hint Shows and When to Use It
Use Show next country outline first, then Show all country outlines, then Show country initials. Our World Practice test confirmed that later buttons stay disabled until the previous hint is used. Stop as soon as you have enough information to continue.

Stuck on the Scottish map?
In the reviewed recording, the S… clue identified Stirling. Open the initials walkthrough for the outlines, initials and three-guess result.
The three Travle hints
The ordinary World hint panel sits under your past guesses and starts at 0/3. These are successive unlocks, not three choices available at the start. In our English Ireland-to-Germany Practice test on 2 October 2026, only the next-outline button was initially enabled.

| Hints used | What becomes available |
|---|---|
| 0/3 | Show next country outline |
| 1/3 | Show all country outlines |
| 2/3 | Show country initials |
| 3/3 | All three hints have been used |
We clicked each hint in order and observed each next button become enabled. Special challenges and regional maps can differ; use the controls shown in your selected game.

1. Show next country outline
This draws the shape of the next country you need on the map. It answers the question "which way now?" without naming the country.
Use it when you know roughly where the route goes but cannot decide between two or three neighbours. Seeing the outline usually settles it immediately.
2. Show all country outlines
This draws the shapes of every country still missing from the route. It is the most informative of the three, because it shows the whole remaining path at once.
Use it when you cannot see where the route bends. This happens in crowded regions like the Balkans, Central Africa or the Caucasus, where several paths look about the same length.
3. Show country initials
This reveals initials for missing country names. In the historical Scottish interface, the initial appears when hovering over an outlined area; placement can differ by game version.
Use it when you can picture the area but blank on what a country is called. Typical cases are the small states of West Africa or Central Asia. A letter is often all it takes for the name to come back.
Decide how far to reveal
You cannot jump directly to initials in the tested interface. This table explains the information gained at each successive stage.
| You are missing… | Best hint | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The direction of the next step | Next country outline | Shows one shape, keeps the rest a puzzle |
| The overall shape of the route | All country outlines | Reveals every remaining country's position |
| A country's name you half know | Country initials, after both outline hints | Adds name clues to the revealed areas |
A sensible order for using hints
- Plan first. List the start's and end's neighbours without submitting them yet. Choose a chain, then enter from the start if aiming for Perfect. Our strategy guide explains the both-ends method.
- Name the gap. Work out exactly what you are missing: a direction, a shape or a name.
- Use the next available hint. Check whether it resolves the gap before unlocking another.
- Re-plan before guessing. A hint often changes the best route. Recount the countries before you type again.
Hints can help on long routes. In the Weekly Challenge, first check which hints that particular puzzle offers.
Common hint mistakes
- Trying to click a disabled later hint. Use the preceding hint first. Disabled initials at 0/3 are expected in the tested interface, not an unknown-country error.
- Guessing straight after a hint. The outline you just saw may show a shorter route than the one you planned, so recount first.
- Leaving a route without saving it. An older recording appears to lose progress around a help-panel visit. We have not reproduced that in the current game; keep your own route notes if you navigate away.
- Misreading initials. Initials follow the country's name in the game, so watch for names with more than one common form. Check the spelling the game accepts as you type.
