What Does an Orange Guess Mean in Travle?

Orange describes a guess in the context of your previous guesses. It did not reduce the minimum guesses still needed, but a route through it remains close to the best remaining route.

Why a shortest-route country can turn orange

The official scoring example uses Spain → Austria. France plus Germany, Switzerland or Italy can make a two-guess route. Suppose you enter Germany first: now you need only France, so Germany earns 🟩 even though it is disconnected.

If you next enter Italy, you still need France. Italy was on a shortest route before you guessed Germany, but it no longer saves a guess. It is orange in this situation. A country does not have one permanent score.

The orange rule also allows a route through the new guess that needs one more additional guess than the best remaining route. Worse routes, or impossible ones, receive red feedback. Count additional guesses from the current state, not just countries on an untouched puzzle.

A recorded orange guess that cost one extra move

In GeoWizard's 2023 Denmark-to-Armenia attempt, Germany connects but receives orange. The final result is 5 guesses against a minimum of 4. Sweden and Finland form the shorter northern opening. Compare both complete routes.

What to do after orange

  1. Keep the full guess history in view; earlier guesses affect the next rating.
  2. Count the still-missing intermediate countries on your alternatives.
  3. Complete the best remaining chain within your allowance. Repeating an accepted country cannot undo a spent guess.
  4. Review the final count against the minimum, then replay to try a better opening.

Orange is a history rating, while gray map fill means the chain has not reached the start. The screenshot is a historical example, not a fresh daily answer or a new DLEWiki play-test.
